Interrelation between radio and X-ray signatures of drifting subpulses in pulsars

چکیده
A partially screened vacuum gap model of the inner acceleration region in pulsars is examined with respect to the drifting subpulse phenomenon and the polar cap heating by the streams of back-flowing particles generated in sparks associated with drifting subpules. We investigated correlation between the intrinsic drift rate and polar cap heating rate and found that they are coupled to each other and therefore the X-ray luminosity Lx from heated polar cap depends only on the observational tertiary subpulse drift periodicity P̂3 (polar cap carousel time). We derived a ”clean-cut” formula relating Lx and P̂3, which manifests the fact that both the drift rate as well as the polar cap heating rate are determined by the same value of the gap electric field. In PSR B0943+10 for which both Lx and P̂3 are known, this formula holds amazingly well. Based on several cases in which P̂3 is known it is argued that Lx/Ė ∼ 10−3, where Ė is the pulsar spin-down rate. This intriguing property was previously attributed to the pulsar magnetospheric emission. In this paper we suggest that it could also be a characteristic property of thermal emission from the spark heated polar cap.

Thermal radiation from hot polar cap in pulsars
Thermal radiation from hot polar caps is examined in radio pulsars with drifting subpulses. It is argued that if these subpulses correspond to sparking discharges of the inner acceleration region right above the polar cap surface then a simple relationship between the observed subpulse drift rate in radio and thermal X-ray luminosity from the polar cap heated by sparks should exist. This relati...
متن کاملXmm-newton Observations of Radio Pulsars B0834+06 and B0826 34 and Implications for the Pulsar Inner Accelerator
We report the X-ray observations of two radio pulsars with drifting subpulses, B0834+06 and B0826 34, using XMM-Newton. PSR B0834+06 was detected with a total of 70 counts from the three EPIC instruments over 50 ks exposure time. Its spectrum is best described as that of a blackbody (BB), with temperature Ts 1⁄4 (2:0þ2:0 0:9) ; 10 K and bolometric luminosity Lb 1⁄4 (8:6þ14:2 4:4 ) ; 10 erg s . ...

Partially shielded vacuum gap model of the inner acceleration region in pulsars is examined with respect to the drifting subpulse phenomenon and the polar cap heating by E×B drifting sparks. The formula for the efficiency of X-ray luminosity from heated polar cap Lx/Ė ≈ (P̂3/P ) −2 was derived, which depends only on the observational tertiary subpulse drift periodicity P̂3. In PSR B0943+10 for wh...
متن کاملThe Subpulse Modulation Properties of Pulsars and its Frequency Dependence
A large sample of about two hundred pulsars have been observed to study their subpulse modulation at an observing wavelength of (when achievable) both 21 and 92 cm using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. For 57 pulsars drifting subpulses are discovered for the first time and are confirmed for many others. This leads to the conclusion that it could well be that the drifting subpulse mech...
متن کاملThe subpulse modulation properties of pulsars at 92 cm and the frequency dependence of subpulse modulation
Context. A large sample of pulsars has been observed to study their subpulse modulation at an observing wavelength (when achievable) of both 21 and 92 cm using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. In this paper we present the 92-cm data and a comparison is made with the already published 21-cm results. Aims. The main goals are to determine what fraction of the pulsars have drifting subpuls...
